[Mason, William], 1810-1897. Attributed works :Lock up Port Nicholson. 17 July 1840.
Date: 1840
By: Mason, William, 1810-1897
Reference: Plans-80-1222-1
Description: A photographic copy of Plans-80-1222, showing it before backing and trimming around the edges. Plan of a prison or stockade made of wood for Wellington, showing plan view with two cells flanking a constable's room in the centre, and dotted lines to indicate the design for a third cell, should this be necessary. There is also an elevation of the front, with a central door flanked by two windows. The cells appear to be windowless. There is an elevation of the end wall and an elevation and section of the surrounding fence. The lock-up measures 30 feet by 12 feet and is in a fenced compound measuring 64 feet by 48 feet. The plan is signed by the Governor, William Hobson. This version shows additional text trimmed off when the plan was glued to a linen backing According to Louis E. Ward's 'Early Wellington' the first prison or lock-up in Wellington was one of the New Zealand Company's wooden houses at Petone, followed by a thatched cottage at Thorndon (by June 1940 before the construction of this building, assumed to be in Thorndon). Felton Mathew's 1841 map of Wellington shows the prison as being on Mount Cook. By early 1842 the prison building must have been larger than that shown in this drawing, since a newspaper report of 9 March 1842 stated that about 60 prisoners were at the Wellington Gaol. Another report on December 1843 (Ward, p. 125) refers to the new gaol about a mile from the Courthouse (Mulgrave Street) - probably the Mount Cook site? The masonry building destroyed by the 1848 earthquake (at Mount Cook?) was a 2-storied building. Quantity: 1 plan(s). Physical Description: Print of photographic negative

The key to Charles Heaphy's 'Thorndon Flat' of April 1841 shows a small building on Thorndon Quay, almost as far north as Pipitea Pa, as the Jail, probably this building. Felton Mathew's 1841 map of Wellington shows the prison as being on Mount Cook. By early 1842 the prison building must have been larger than that shown in this drawing, since a newspaper report of 9 March 1842 stated that about 60 prisoners were at the Wellington Gaol. The masonry building destroyed by the 1848 earthquake (at Mount Cook?) was a 2-storied building. The text on this plan has been partially trimmed, but is shown in full in the associated photograph held at Plans-80-1222-1. It reads: The dotted lines on the ground plan denote the position of an extra cell should it be required, in which case another door and window will be necessary as shewn on each side of the chimney. (Upper right). On the centre right the text reads 'Approved but the external Stockade is not to be constructed until further order'. On the lower left the plan is signed and dated by the 'Colonial Architect', July 17th 1840. The only person to be officiallly the Colonial Architect was William Clayton, many years later. This signature, the first initial W., is illegible, although it could be W. Mason for William Mason, Superintendant of Works in Auckland and occasional architect. Quantity: 1 plan(s).
