A large milk tanker representing the 'melamine scandal' passes a second tanker representing the '2009 payout' as it collides with a cow which represents Fonterra. The cow thinks to itself 'Another bumper year...' Refers to the Chinese melamine scandal when melamine was deliberately mixed with milk powder in order to artificially raise the protein levels and which has had the effect of causing thousands of Chinese babies to become ill with kidney problems and several to die. Fonterra has a business relationship with Sanlu, the company most involved with the scandal. Fonterra has slashed the 2008/2009 payout for the 2008-09 dairy season by 90 cents to $5.10 per kilogram of milk solids, removing more than $1 billion from New Zealand's economy. The plunge is due to falling global commodity prices as recession cuts demand and the ongoing melamine saga with Sanlu in China. Fonterra has written off its $201 million investment in a 43 percent Sanlu stake.
