Description

Two portraits of Maori men. At the top is Te Reweti, son of Apihai Te Kawau, a Ngati Whatua chief, shown head and shoulders with a flax cloak and moko on his face. Below is a profile view of a young man, 'drawn in London'. Like Te Rewiti he has short hair and moko

From an unknown published work, plate or page 20, with 'New Zealand' at the top.

The face of Te Reweti is probably based on his lithographed portrait by J J Merrett, illustrating 'New Zealand, its advantages and prospects as a British colony by Charles Terry' (London, 1842), p.193. In Terry's book, 'Te Rewiti' is shown in in European clothing, and is described as 'Te Rewiti, eldest son of Te Kauwau'. The previous lithograph in the book is 'Te Kawau, chief of the Ngati Whatua tribe'

Other Titles - Te Reweti, Te Kawau, Ngati Whatua
