Head and shoulders frontal portrait of the artist's father, artist and solicitor, William Mathew Hodgkins. He is beardless and has a large moustache and is wearing a suit
Probably painted after the artist became a pupil of G. B. P. Nerli's in 1893.
Listed as catalogue no. 61 in E H McCormick's 'Works of Frances Hodgkins in New Zealand' (1954). Titled 'The old man's head', and listed as in the collection of Miss Kathleen Hutton, Auckland, inherited from her father, David E Hutton, teacher at the Dunedin School of Art.
