The Galina Wassiliewa School of Russian Classical Ballet opened in Wellington, in 1953. Sometime in the late 1950s the school also became the New Zealand Branch of the British Association of Russian Classical Ballet. Galina Wassiliewa retired from running the school in 1987. At the time of her retirement the school was to be taken over by Jane Stephens who had studied with her for 14 years. According to another student, Kieth McEwing, the school continued as a co-operative until about 1992. Galina continued to teach and take private pupils until shortly before her death in 1999.
