Robley, Horatio Gordon, 1840-1930 :Sketch in trenches, Gate Pa. 30 April 1864.

Shows two Maori wrapped in blue-grey blankets, sitting in a trench, with a spade at the right. Another Maori man is visible under a tunnel/ shelter at right. Sparse palisades are shown on the rampart in the background. According to accompanying notes, the sketch is of wounded Maori including a young warrior. Reweti is in the centre; he was shot by Dr Manley, V.C.

Inscriptions: Verso - centre - (in ink by artist): Sketch of wounded Maori. Reweti in centre (and a young warrior) was 2nd in command Gate Pa. Was shot by Dr Manley, V.C. Sketch early 30 April 1864. Artist gave these two some brandy but they looked curiously at me when sketching them. They were only slightly tattooed.; Mount recto - beneath image - wounded Maori (Reweti in centre was second in command at Gate or Pukehinahina Pa). He had been shot by Dr Manley V.C. 29 April 1864 outside when the stormers had retired). Sketch taken early 30th - artist divided his flask with these and others, but young warrior looked curiously on at taking portraits in a hurry (see the watching portrait) signed HGR

Provenance: Bought by Dr Stokes, from Woodward House Antiques in Woodward Street by the Terrace, in September 1978. Dr Stokes lent the work to the University of Waikato Library where it hung until the retirement of the Librarian Jenny King, when it was returned to Dr Stokes.
