Description

A standing portrait of the back view of Tacouri (a Te Hikutuu chief, aka Te Kauri, Tacoury), a tattooed man, wearing feathers in his hair, and holding a blanket or cloak in front of him. The tattooing is on the buttocks and legs. (Identified in Anne Salmond's "Two worlds" (1991), page 373).

This drawing appears to be a copy by an unknown hand of the original drawings by an unknown artist on Marion Dufresne's voyage, 1772 (it also bears similarities to a drawing of Ranginui, a Ngapuhi chief, with tattooed buttock, by Pottier de L'Orme, on de Surville's 1769 voyage). It may be a drawing preparatory to the engraving in Jean-Marie Crozet's "Nouveau voyage a la Mer du Sud commence sous les ordres de M Marion" (1783). The drawing is numbered Plate 2 as it appears in the publication.

The image is the same way around as the resulting engraving.

Accompanying folded blue light card, inscribed "Marion"; "Ensemble de 7 dessin[s]: Oceanie".

Date thought to be close to date of original drawing, and possibly before the publication of Crozet's book in 1783. Dated by an examination of the watermarks on the paper of some of the other drawings.
