- Description
Shows a scene in the pa at Wanganui. In the right foreground, three cloaked figures sit engaged in wood-carving. To the right of them, several hens scratch in the dirt. In the left foreground a black and white spotted pig sleeps tied to a pole, in front of a bearded cloaked Maori with a child on his back. He stands near a pataka at the far left; this stands in front of a meeting house with carved verandah poles and painted rafters. There are two other pataka in the right background. At the far left are the wooden poles of a palisade fence, and at the far right is a row of rakau huts.
Watercolour attributed by the vendor to John A Gilfillan, depicting a scene in the area in which he lived. It appears to be by a more primitive hand. It is signed J.G. or I.G. This could be his son John Gordon Gilfillan, the only child whose name begins with an I or J. John Gordon Gilfillan was an artist
