Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. Features noted include: Mount Hobson, Mount Eden, Captain Scott's farm, The positions of each tribe and their huts, the tribes which gave the feast carrying out provisions to their guests, a structure bedecked with handkerchiefs and shawls used as flags, an immense quantity of dried sharks, the chief police magistrate, Epiha a native chief on his own horse, Captain Fitzroy, Mr Sheppard the Colonial Treasurer, Mr Swainson the Attorney-General. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, (with title The New-Zealand festival), which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library, Dunedin. Words below the image read: The Maori feast depicted in this picture was one of then largest ever held in New Zealand. It was given by the Waikato chiefs. The site chosen was in the vicinity of Mt Hobson, at Remuera, near Auckland. About four thousand natives were present. A shed 400 yards long had been erected and was covered with blankets; and tents decorated with little flags, dotted the ground. The provisions comprised 11,000 baskets of potatoes, 9,000 sharks, 100 pigs, and large quantities of tea, tobacco, and sugar. A thousand blankets had been provided as presents. Governor Fitzroy, with his suite, visited the meeting on the 11th May 1844, when 1,600 natives, armed with guns and tomahawks, danced the wardance. The assembling of so large a force near the infant capital caused some uneasiness among the settlers, but admirable order was maintained throughout. The various tribes were accompanied by their missionaries, and religious services were well attended. The feast lasted about a week. Description: Golden Bay in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. A canoe of Maori men in the foreground, and two views of Tasman's ships, the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen (both flying the Dutch flag), sailing away in the left foreground, and surrounded by canoes and firing their canon in the middle distance. A rowboat (the cockboat of the Zeehaen) is between the two ships, with its occupants being attacked in the centre. Also in the left foreground can be seen the Heemskerck's pinnace towing the Zeehaen's cockboat back to the two ships after the attack. The hills of Golden Bay form a backdrop to the scene. The canoe in the foreground appears to be double-hulled. The rowers all have topknot hairstyles. The man standing on the right at the prow of the canoe is wearing a woven garment, covering his shoulders and tied at the breast, while the others have loin-cloths, and in one case, a garment that envelopes the torso. Date: 1860 - 1890

Reference: B-121-021
Description: Shows wooden three-storied house (if an attic window is included), painted yellow, with a fenced-in garden and a flagpole on the left, two women with long dark dresses and headscarves chatting on the road outside the fence, by the flagpole with the Union Jack flying. On the right is a rough fence with deciduous trees and there are further houses on the slope leading down to the harbour in the background. The scene is in the flatter part of the town that is some distance back from the waterfront. Picton had buildings of this size as early as the later 1860s, although the number of houses shown and the style of the womens' clothes suggest a later date of the 1880s or 1890s. Photographs in Pictorial Reference Service checked, along with the images reproduced in Henry D. Kelly's book 'As high as the hills ; the centennial history of Picton' (Whatamongo Bay, 1976), but no clue to the identity of the house has been found. Identity of the artist not known. The Library has a black and white photograph of a watercolour of "Wainui House, Nile Street, Nelson" (neg 47028 1/2) signed AW and dated 1893, location of original unknown, which could possibly be the work of the same artist, although the form of the monogram is different. The artist's style is competent and suggests some training. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Picton. N.Z.; Recto - bottom right - AW Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
