Description: Depicts the ceremony of choosing the first National flag of New Zealand by the Maori chiefs from one of three designs, witnessed by a grathering of missionaries, settlers, commanders of 10 British and 3 American ships. The ceremony took place at the house of the British Resident, Mr James Busby at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on the 20th March 1834 with a salute of 21 guns from HMS Alligator (in distance). The flag that was chosen is being pointed at by a chief holding up a greenstone mere. The design chosen was the red cross of St George on a white background and a small red St George's cross in the top left hand corner on a blue background. In each of these quarters is an 8 pointed star. An enlargement of the flag is in the bottom lefthand corner of the postcard. The flag was called the Flag of United Tribes of New Zealand (1834-1840) The flag was adopted by Shaw Savill & Company as its house flag in 1858 it having ceased to be the national flag when New Zealand came under the British sovereignty Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: The front cover shows a portrait of the battleship HMS "New Zealand" in an oval inset, flanked by the New Zealand and British flags, English oak sprigs and New Zealand native berries and leaves. The back cover shows a Union Jack, with inspirational text. Inside are facts about the ship, figures to remember, and an invitation to join the Navy League in order to preserve the British Empire which stands for freedom, justice and righteousness. Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch.
