Description: The notebook contains an account of Te Kooti's visions during his detention on the Chatham Islands. Also included are lists of names. The notebook would appear to be in Te Kooti's hand. Publication - Partial translations were published in the `Nelson Examiner' 5 May 1869, and `The Monthly Review' March 1889 Accompanying material - Accompanied by translations of pages numbered in red, 1-25 (8 pages) and points of interest (2 pages) Other - Cover title: Const. Brennan. The notebook appears to have one time been the property of Constable Frederick Brennan who was stationed on the Chatham Islands in 1867. He had used the notebook before Te Kooti acquired it. Other - For further information see Richard Hill `Te Kooti's Notebook' Archifacts 13 (March 1980), and Judith Binney `Redemption songs. A Life of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki' (1995), pp 328-334 Te Kooti, a military leader and prophet was founder of the Ringatu religion. He was imprisoned for sedition in March 1866 and transported to the Chatham Islands where he received celestial visions. Description: Rev Canon Rua Anderson details his whakapapa, names of the tupuna related to the Otewa Marae and surrounding areas, significant events that he attended in his youth and gives a descriptive history of the wharekai, Nga Awa, Nga Whenua and taniwha. Talks about his family, the flu epidemic and about the first and second marae. Gives a very in depth description and history of the carvings on the Otewa Marae meeting house - Te Hokinga Mai o Te Wherowhero ki te Nehenehenui. Talks about a trip taken prior to the interview to Tauraroa, Ranginui, Rangitoto Range, Tarapikau, Nga Kohatu. Talks about the Turamoe mountain, the place of the eels, the home of Waiwaia the taniwha, the feud between Ngati Whakatere and Matakore and about Ringatu Te Kooti. Description: Dolly Anderson was born in Te Maika, Kawhia on 14 December 1913. Describes her childhood, without formal schooling, her father, who drowned in 1928 and her four brothers and three sisters. Talks about Catholicism and hardly ever seeing Pakeha. Recalls food and fuel gathering and how she got to dances at Kawhia by horse and boat. Describes doing housework and working in a shop selling food. Recalls living and working in Hamilton, Rotorua and Kawerau. Talks about getting married, her children, the death of her husband and how she coped as a widow. Describes ensuring her children were educated. Comments on Maori-Pakeha relationships. Discusses World War II and her objection to Maori men fighting but also the support she gave when they departed. Talks about some of the war deaths and tangi held for soldiers. Recalls attending tangihanga at Ngaruawahia and her family's involvement in the coronation of the Maori King. Gives the Maori King whakapapa. Discusses aspects of the Ratana movement. Talks about working in a cookhouse and running a laundry service, health, childbirth, Maori medicine and Maori attitudes to doctors and hospitals. Describes being wahine karanga for Tokanga Nuia Noho Marae.
