Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Photographic negatives from a roll of film taken in circa 1992 and April 1992 by Judith Binney, during her research into the life of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki, particularly in relation into the Ringatu Church. Subjects of some images are unidentified. Corresponding prints are at PAColl-9928-08. Three were taken at the Whiritoa headland, Hauraki district, which was a Ringatu settlement. Two of these feature Peter Ellis and Connie Huitoroa. Two show Mataora Bay, also formerly a Ringatu settlement. Three show the remains of a Ringatu church-house called Hurae (July) at Paritu (now part of Opoutere on the Wharekawa estuary). Five images show the whalebone mere held by the Bryce family and said to have been given by Te Kooti to Native Minister John Bryce on the occasion of his pardon on 12 February 1883. Three show an undated painting of Te Kooti, entitled 'Retreat from Ngatapa 1869' by Frank Davis. Accompanying information - Some prints have descriptions by Binney on the backs. The paper packet that originally held prints and negatives, has descriptive notes by Binney and is held at PAColl-9928-08. Description: A typescript thesis (or draft of a book) relating to the history of Lake Waikaremoana which includes colour photographic prints of places including Panekiri Bluff (photographer, author and date unknown). Included with the typescript are copies of Māori whakapapa, and photocopied extracts from the "Wairoa minute book", dated 1915, which relate to the author's research. Probably taken from Maori Land Court records. Also twenty-four black and white photographic copy prints relating to Rua Kenana, his wives, the religious community at Maungapōhatu, and the Maungapōhatu temple. Includes photographs of the police raid at Maungapōhatu, and the capture of Rua Kenana. Original photographs would have been taken circa 1908-1916. All photographs have annotations on the reverse. Description: The notebook contains an account of Te Kooti's visions during his detention on the Chatham Islands. Also included are lists of names. The notebook would appear to be in Te Kooti's hand. Publication - Partial translations were published in the `Nelson Examiner' 5 May 1869, and `The Monthly Review' March 1889 Accompanying material - Accompanied by translations of pages numbered in red, 1-25 (8 pages) and points of interest (2 pages) Other - Cover title: Const. Brennan. The notebook appears to have one time been the property of Constable Frederick Brennan who was stationed on the Chatham Islands in 1867. He had used the notebook before Te Kooti acquired it. A Life of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki' (1995), pp 328-334 Te Kooti, a military leader and prophet was founder of the Ringatu religion. He was imprisoned for sedition in March 1866 and transported to the Chatham Islands where he received celestial visions.
