Description

Photographs, cartoons, and artwork relating to people and activities associated with the New Zealand Post Office Union. Includes photographs of marches and demonstrations; group and individual portraits of the Executive Committee, Regrading Committee and Post Office Appeal Board; conferences including a Postal Telegraph Telephone International conference; politicians; Ernie Abbott's funeral; original cartoons and artwork relating to the union publication "The Katipo". Many of the photographs appear to have been used in "The Katipo", as they have various directions on their backs regarding size and location in the journal. Many photographs are also inscribed with names and tentative dates.

Many of the photographs appear in the history of the Union: Roth, Bert. 'Along the Line - 100 Years of Post Office Unionism'. Post Office Union, 1990. It is possible that some photographs were produced for that publication.

Arrangement: Photographs donated in 2017 were originally enclosed in labelled envelopes.

Description: Photographs, mainly taken by unknown photographers, primarily of people and buildings related to Post Office and Post Office Assocation history. Includes photographs of early Post Office Association badges; a copy photograph of Radio Awanui staff in 1917; photographs of the Association's Wellington building 'Katipo House' and a photograph of the Post office at St Bathans; photographs of early Departmental and Association leaders; and several copy photographs of staff groups including messenger boys in Whanganui and staff at Frankton in 1926 (the latter with a letter to 'Katipo' glued to the back). An original 1906 photograph of Dunedin messsage boys has the inscription on the back: "Dunedin Post Office message boy staff 33 members 8 hour day meals 15 minutes we were a happy family" and the name and address of the sender. Also includes a photograph from the Otago Early Settlers' Museum of the Pier Hotel in Dunedin, where the founding meeting for the Association was held.
