Description

Collection comprises posters relating to Chris Bourke's interest in popular music and graphic design (1980-2006), and live unpublished recordings of the New Zealand band 'Daggy and the Dickheads' (1981-1983).

Chris Bourke is an author of books relating to the history of New Zealand popular music. He is a cousin of the lead guitarist of the band 'Daggy and the Dickheads', and assisted with making some of the recordings in this collection.

Description: Group portrait of the New Zealand Māori dance band Tai Paul and His Pohutu Boys ready for a performance inside Tamatekapua, the meeting house at Ohinemutu, Rotorua. Taken by John Scott Studios in December 1955 and published in the 'NZ Listener' magazine on 9 December 1955. The photograph shows the band wearing white evening jackets, black bow-ties, and an evening dress, while posing with their instruments. The front row are seated behind stage booths decorated with musical notes and crowns, and a sign reading "Tai Paul and his Pohutu Boys". Band members are (left to right): Pat Montague (guitar), Vic Bartholomew (piano), Ali Brown (saxophone), Margaret Henderson (vocalist), Don McKenzie (drums), Tai Paul, Anugs Douglas (vocalist and guitar), Teddy Walker (saxophone), Oscar Maika (bass), and Napi Walker (trumpet). The musicians include: Dan McCartin (guitar), Lez White (bass), Paul Kennedy (drums), Mark Kennedy (vocals). Songs by the Dickheads 1981-1982 except 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, and 11 by Lez White, and 8 by Hank Wangford. 13, 17 by The Clash, and 18 by Graham Parker.
