Description

Collection comprises material salvaged from the New Zealand Meat Laboratory building in Johnsonville by Peter Dawson in circa 1990 and related collected material.

Includes indexed volume of product formulae, including for stock licks, dog food, self-raising flour, sheep marking fluid, and Rawleigh's Colic Ease, compiled circa 1930s-1960s. Also two volumes regarding samples analysed at the laboratory between 1952 to 1956 and 1959 to 1962, a photograph [laboratory founder Henry William Lawrence and his son Gilbert Alexander Lawrence?] outside the laboratory building circa 1920, and articles written and collected by Dawson regarding the history of private analytic laboratories from 1996 and 2005.

Laboratory was founded as a private consultancy and analytical practice in 1907 or 1908 by Henry William Lawrence who was joined in business by his son Gilbert Alexander Lawrence in circa 1920s. Company name was H W Lawrence & Son Limited when it was sold to Swiss company Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) in 1990.
