Included is the wallet in which Johnston carried his paybook behind and through the lines in North Italy (Veneto area), Venezia and Udine; Allied pamphlets dropped by air forces and Axis ones delivered to German soldiers; press clippings, mostly propaganda, from `Gazetino di Venezia'. His father's records are a World War I Field Service Book, listing actions, trench operations, personnel details and includes hand-drawn maps.
The papers on Taihape include correspondence between Johnston and Will Cryer re history of early Taihape, particularly the people of the district (1939); and itinerary re tour of Taihape district with focus on Maori history (1965)

Roy Johnston collected material relating to propaganda on both sides of World War Two while he was in Italy, as a soldier and as a prisoner. His father's field service book was kept in France during World War One.
