The collection includes letters and poems from James K Baxter, which discuss his current work and his personal life, including his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous, for the period 1953-1965. There are also letters from Frank Sargeson containing comments on Ireland's work, contemporary New Zealand writers, publishing and general personal matters, for the period 1957-1979, and a letter from Reed Publishers dated 8 Aug 1979 about Sargeson's novel `En Route'.
Contains correspondence files, 1967-1994, including correspondence from Maurice Shadbolt, Robin Dudding and Elizabeth Smither; correspondence, drafts and other papers related to the production of `The New Zealand Collection - a celebration of the New Zealand novel', 1989; correspondence relating to and drafts of various operas Ireland wrote the libretto's for; drafts of poems in `Tiberius at the Beehive'; draft of `The year of the comet - 26 1986-sonnets' and `Practice night in the drill hall'; copies of five poems by James K Baxter; typescript of `Endeavour's Wake - poems by Louis Johnson' and other miscellaneous papers. Also contains minutes, correspondence and other papers of PEN Auckland branch and PEN New Zealand.

- Partly restricted material - Access to Kevin Ireland's correspondence and personal literary papers requires his permission during his lifetime. In the event of his unavailability, and for 20 years after his death, access will require the written permission of the Chief Librarian. Access to PEN material is unrestricted except for (i) the `Complaints' files, access to these requires the written permission of the President of the New Zealand Society of Authors (or its successor) until the end of 2045. (ii) PEN correspondence less than 20 years old also requires permission of the President, New Zealand Society of Authors.
