George Clark was the maternal grandfather of Sir Edmund Hillary, and father of Gertrude Clark (married name Hillary). Born Nelson, 5 November 1845. Died Auckland 3 September 1901. Description: The Wedding breakfast of William Mathews and Edith Clark. Photographed by an unknown photographer on the 28th of September 1909. The breakfast is laid in the front room of the Clark's family home, `Whakahara,' Northern Wairoa, Northland. The portrait on the wall is of George Clark (Snr). Whakahara homestead was established in 1860. It was located north of Tokatoka on the edge of the Northern Wairoa River, Northland, and was one of the first trading stations established in the region.
