Description

Photographs collected by Ralph Johnson, mainly relating to the theatre company Town and Country Players, taken between 1979-1989 by a range of photographers. Includes 20 prints taken in China between 1945-1947, by unidentified photographers, probably relating to Johnson's father's service with the Friends Ambulance Unit. Also includes a small number of images relating to Wellington based filmmaker George Rose.

- 'Town and Country Players' images are mainly of the members of the company performing or posing in outdoor locations. Some images show school children watching and acting.

- Negatives show Town and Country Players troupes of 1980 and 1983 in rehearsal and performance. Some negative images have matching prints.

Arrangement: Photographs were arranged by year into envelopes labelled with Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council 'Performers in Schools' stickers on delivery to the Library.

Ralph Johnson acted with Town and Country Players, which was founded by Murray Edmond and Mary Paul in 1980. The membership of the company changed every two years. It was initially funded by the Project Employment Programme (PEP) scheme, and later supported by fees, sponsorship, and grants from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. The company was based in Wellington, and toured rural areas.

Description: Photographs chiefly relating to the work of the China Convoy of the Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) in China between 1945-1947. Taken by unidentified photographers between circa 1941 to 1944, and between 1945 to 1947. Many images have inscriptions on the reverse. - Two images, probably taken in New Zealand, show Al and Margaret cutting a wedding cake and Roy Lucas posing in uniform (the latter image inscribed 'preparing for China' and dated 26 April 1945). - Images of individual FAU and Friends Service Unit (FSU) members taken in China include: Peter F Early (Chairman, Friends Service Unit), Douglas J Clifford (New Zealand), and Spencer L Coxe (Australia). Also includes a group portrait taken on Christmas Day 1945 featuring McClure, Bradshaw, Stokes, Dodds, B[?], Wiehs[?], Gibson, Chen, Kwan, Fransham, Hsiung, Wu, Chu, Briggs, Gunn, Ho, and Fox. - Includes images of Arthur Wallbank with a Chinese student, and Alf Sidwell with a student in a an engineering workshop, both inscribed as possibly taken at the Medical Mechanics School, Chengchou (Zhengzhou) or at the Institute of Hospital Technology in Hankou circa 1947. - Includes images of local people, sheep, cats, and rural landscapes in Honan (Henan) and Kweichow. Includes images of the Yellow River bridge, FAU trucks on a narrow cliff road near Guangyuan, Northern Sichuan, and the O P D and gatehouse at Hwi Mei[?]. One image shows a bombed railway station at Sin Siang.
