Description

Items, chiefly photographs, relating to family members of the donor - Tod Hennessy, Joan Fahey, Jane Boyle - taken circa 1890 to circa 1940s by a range of photographers.

The images are a range of family photographs and others, taken around New Zealand but also overseas. They include some that relate to World War I and some of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Includes photographs and letters on postcards relating to Tod Hennessy's (great uncle of donor) service during World War I.

Also photographs relating to Gisborne and motor cars. (Hennessy's family was based in Gisborne). One image shows Wizard Smith and his racing car 'Enterprise' at Ninety Mile Beach.

Also photographs relating to Jane Boyle (great, great grandmother of donor) including her 100th birthday celebration.

Arrangement: Some photographs contain numbers on the back of prints which reflect the order they had once been in inside an album. The donor stated that they had been in date order.

Bernadette Morriss is niece of Joan Fahey; great, great granddaughter of Jane Boyle; and great niece of Tod Hennessy.

Description: Four album pages with 17 photographs by an unknown photographer showing mainly images of damaged buildings in Napier following the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Also includes images of automobiles and mud in Gisborne, including of a royal mail car stuck in the mud on the Gisborne - Tolaga Bay road, which is also available digitally at PAColl-5293-14. Description: Comprises mainly photographs relating to the Gisborne Motor Service Co and their fleet of cars. Includes images following a fire at the Gisborne Motor Service on 23 February 1927, and images of cars presumably from the motor service being used on roads in Gisborne city and the Gisborne region. Includes images of cars in various weather conditions, including snow, and also a horse-drawn carriage with wheels trapped in deep mud en route to Tolaga Bay from Gisborne, and cars on the road in deeply forested areas. Also includes an image entitled, 'Departure of hockey girls per Gisborne Motor Service', which shows a line-up of vehicles with men and women sitting on the cars or kneeling in front of them. Also includes an image of 'Wizard' Smith, and his racecar at Ninety Mile Beach, and a small number of photographs possibly relating to Joan Frances Fahey, including an image of a group of tennis players. Description: Photographs from the collection of Joan Fahey taken by a range of photographers, chiefly between circa 1910 and circa 1930s. The items include loose prints, and pages from a photograph album. The images are a range of family photographs and others, taken around New Zealand but also overseas. Photographs include an image of a tour group on camelback in front of one of the pyramids at Giza, Egypt; a Maori man wearing a cloak in front of a small thatched whare; postcard photographs of sheep at Panikau (Gisborne) and flocks of seagulls at Cape Brett; a panoramic image of Russell taken by J Burfoot; a group portrait of nuns; a group portrait of women in sailor dresses; a group portrait of children from Ponsonby; and photographs of World War I soldiers in uniform. Also included is a page from a photograph album showing soldiers in uniform, and images of war monuments and obelisks in Gisborne. Description: Photograph album includes a range of photographs, including family and group portraits, images from World War One, travel photographs from the Riviera in Europe, and photographs of scenery and views mainly of the Gisborne area. Album also includes images of automobiles and scenery of Napier and Waikaremoana, and photographs taken at the Sydney Zoo and other sites in Australia. The album also contains a series of photographs of the shipwrecking of the Star of Canada on Kaiti Beach, Gisborne. Many photographs have some caption information. The S.S.
