Description

Photographs of soldier Joseph Henry Williams' voyage on board HMNZT 76 ('Aparima') during World War I troopship convoy in Feb-May 1917. Photographs most likely taken by Williams.

They record the voyage of a troopship convoy that left New Zealand in Feb 1917, bound for England, travelling via Albany (Australia) and Cape Town (South Africa). Images include scenes on board ship the ship HMNZT 78 'Aparima', views of other ships in the convoy (at sail and docked at wharves), sunrises and ocean conditions, and Cape Town seen from the water. Other identified New Zealand ships in the fleet include HMNZT 77 ('Mokoia') and HMNZT 78 ('Navua'). Photographs of particular note are on board images of soldiers practicing signal drilling, unidentified officers, soldiers sitting on the aft deck, and a image of Williams labelled 'Me'.

Also contains nine envelopes with annotations regarding negatives in Williams' hand.

Collection originally purchased as the negatives of Joe Williams of Hokianga, who died of dysentry on a hospital ship off Gallipoli in 1915. However, during A&D text on two ships \"NZ 77\" ('Mokoia') and \"NZ 76\" ('Aparima') was identified. These two HMNZT numbers were used exclusively in a Feb-May 1917 transportation. Though a number of men called Joseph Williams served during World War I, the only one who travelled in the Feb-May 1917 convoy was bootmaker Joseph Henry Williams on board HMNZ 76 ('Aparima'). Information from Cenotaph database.

Joseph Henry Williams was also likely to have worked in communication as images in this collection are often taken from the wireless room on board ship. Some portraits are posed outside the door of the wireless room, with one image including a sign saying soldiers are not allowed in the wireless room. Where notes are made, they are made on envelopes branded \"Marconigram (Amalgamated Wireless Australasia)\"
