- Description
The collection comprises most aspects of Helen Brew’s career as a speech therapist, child psychologist, parent, actress, and documentary film maker. The papers relate to Brew's education, her role in the foundation of the Parent's Centre movement, work on hospital reform over the treatment of mothers and children, her involvement with the Mental Health Foundation, and her involvement as an actress (and playwright) in amateur and television drama. A large part of the collection relates to her work as a documentary film maker. These include the R D Laing documentary 'Birth', documentaries about child rearing in China, and her projects on child rearing as a whole. The search for film funding led to an extensive correspondence with potential sponsors and supporters. This part of the collection includes transcripts of audio recordings. There are comparatively few photographs.
Arrangement: The circumstances of the salvage destroyed much of the original arrangement. The papers have been divided into twenty five series reflecting their subject matter. Some of the papers appear to bear no relevance to Helen Brew's life and work. They have been placed in a separate series. There is also a large collection of audio tapes, comprising interview and private recordings. These are awaiting a full description.
Helen Brew, a child psychologist and speech therapist, was heavily involved in parenting and child raising, a pioneer of the New Zealand Parent Centre movement and a determined advocate for the reform of hospital practice in maternity services and child care. She was also an actress and was prominent as a documentary producer, mainly relating to child care-related subjects. Noted documentaries included 'Birth' about the work of psychiatrist R D Laing, and 'China in Change', about child rearing in China.
