Shows rural and urban scenes in Germany, especially around Bavaria and other central and southern provinces. The artist appears to have been on a tour and the sketches are mostly dated between 20 August and 27 September 1838.
The sketchbook was initially attributed by the Library (and the vendor) to Eugene von Guerard; however the only basis for this attribution appears to have been that these were finely-finished drawings by a German artist. Von Guerard was travelling and studying in Italy at the date of this sketchbook and not in the areas depicted
