Description

The records include minutebooks, subject files, accounting records, conference records and harbour board reports. The largest series are two subject file record series, one maintained by the Association and the other by the NZ Harbour Boards Industrial Union of Employers to which the Association was closely allied.

The Association's precise date of formation has not yet been established. It was an organisation representing the chairpersons of New Zealand Harbour Boards, who met regularly to make policy decisions, prepare submissions and undertake related tasks. It was closely related to the New Zealand Harbour Boards Industrial Union of Employers (formed in 1937), which dealt with industrial matters, and represented the general managers of Harbour Boards.

The Association went out of existance in 1989 when the Port Reform legislation of 1 October 1988 required port companies to be formed dealing only with the commercial aspects of shipping, with the other functions previously dealt with by harbour boards passing to regional government.
