A film narrative `Pathfinders and treasure seekers: The story of the land of gold and greenstone'. A draft of `The lightning: A West Coast Iliad' and typewritten research notes relating to the early history of Westland including information about land purchases and excerpts and copies of correspondence by Ngai Tahu chiefs and James Mackay. Newspaper articles relating to South Island land purchases and the biography of John Tikao `The story of a Maori sailor'. Draft chapter `Gun-running in the King Country' and typewritten research papers and copies of correspondence relating to `Captain Mair's battles: His defeat of Te Kooti. 1870. Hard running fight near Rotorua' this includes a copy of a letter from Gilbert Mair to his brother Robert Mair, written from Ohinemutu in 1870 and copies of other letters. Newspaper articles relating to Te Kooti. Draft of `The story of the Mahuhu' which Cowan describes as a Maori-Polynesian immigrant vessel, also includes a copy of a published article by the same title. Typewritten draft of `Urewera notes: The valley of the bellbirds' (annotated by Cowan). Draft of `Little legends of Maori land: The message of the sea-shell.
