Chapman-Taylor and his family were at this time living at his house 'I-Breasil' at 17 Chatsworth Road, where he had his own photographic darkroom. Chapman-Taylor was a keen photographer, and exhibited his work. From circa 1937, he created small photographic albums of prints with accompanying text. Some albums featured houses which he had designed.

'Woodlands' was built on a 'bush section' on Chatsworth Road, Silverstream, which New Zealand architect James Walter Chapman-Taylor bought as an investment property. By 1940, he had drawn up plans to build a two storey house on the land. The advent of World War Two caused delays in the acquisition of materials, and led to a simplification of his design. The house was constructed in concrete and from wood felled on site. The first tenants of the house, English architect Monty Finlay-Smith and his New Zealand wife Beryl, were involved in design and building process which took place between 1945 and 1946.
