Photographs relating to the National Council of Churches in New Zealand and the World Council of Churches, including photographs of people, places and events associated with these two organisations, 1928-1987.

Most of the photographs date from the 1960s to the 1980s. There is one image dated 1928, several from the 1930s, and not very many from the 1950s.

Photographs relating to aid projects in different countries

Description: Pacific photographs are mainly of unidentified images of people and events in Fiji. There is at least one image relating to Tahiti, and a small group possibly of New Guinea. Toba Lake in north Sumatra Floods in Sarawak. Students at a work camp, a steet market, and a church at Nakorn Pathorn, Thailand. Tibet and Nepal are represented by images relating to aid and support for Tibeten refugees, and the construction of an unidentified building. A group of images from Taiwan document the salt workers of Putai who suffer from the blackfoot disease contracted from working barefoot in the salt pans. Photographs from the United States include politicians and church personalities; church welfare and other projects within different parts of the United States; Church buildings and Oral Robert's University, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Church organisations aid projects in India, Korea, and Laos

Description: Church aid to children, the starving, and health projects in India. Work projects, housing, and other aid organised by The Korea Church World Service. Many of the photographs relate to Koreans displaced or disabled by the Korean War. Images also record social workers and medical aid, particularly for TB sufferers, flood relief and building a community centre. Churches work with refugees in Laos as well as agricultural development, health and other services such as schools. Quantity: 106 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: African conferences include: World Council of Churches Central Committee meeting in Nigeria; A peace and justice conference in Kenya, 1966; the inaugural All Africa Churches Conference in Uganda; people attending the National Youth Conference in Malawi, 1967; the inaugural meeting of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, Kenya 1970. Included under "Africa General" are: A women worker in a Sudanese button factory, 1962; Sudanese refugee children in Uganda; a wedding party carrying food and women operating a water pump, Cameroon, 1964. Asian Conferences are all Indian subjects. They include a Christian Conference in Asia assembly at Bangalore in 1981; the World YWCA Membership Conference, New Delhi, 1966; a family planning conference in 1968; the Khanspur Christian Conference Centre, 1968. The Church in Communist states include: the inauguration of the Presbyterian Reformed Church of Cuba; a cross in a square in Macao; the millenary celebration service of the Archdiocese of Meissen; the Church of Evangelical Christians - Baptists, Voronezh, Russia. Description: Photographs relating to the United States include personalities; programmes to aid victims of Monsoon failure in India; Civil rights conflict in the form of African American churches destroyed; ecumenical church agencies; marketplace ministries; discussion groups and conferences. The Vietnam photographs relate to aid mainly in the form of medical services, food, and rehabilitation assistance for civilians affected by the war. Pacific photographs cover Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Hong kong, and New Caledonia. Two groups of images are of Pacific Theological College in Fiji, and the opening of the Maropa Bookshop in Vila, Vanuatu, on the 18th of November 1966. Description: Album of photographs recording work being done by Christian churches in the new villages of Malaysia. 500 new villages were created between 1948 and 1960 during the Malayan Emergency as part of the British Commonwealth strategy against the Malaysian communists. By removing people from remote jungle locations to the new villages, the British protected Malaysian citizens, and deprived the communists of sources of food and information.
