Description

The Rev George Armstromg, secretary of Care, addressing the police as they approach the block of protestors in the middle of Hamilton's Rugby Park. Photographed on the 27th of July 1981 by Evening Post photographer Phil Reid

Protests were against the 1981 Springbok tour. In Hamilton protestors occupied the ground and the game was cancelled. This resulted in the Muldoon Government using riot police, and for the rest of the tour games were played behind barbed wire barriers. On the streets protestors and police clashed in increasingly violent battles.
