Description: Gilbert Mair sitting on the pinnacle rock, west end of Mount Tarawera, 100 feet above where water from Lake Rotomahana runs into a large rift. Photograph taken circa 18 November, 1918. Photographer unidentified. Source of descriptive information - Notes written by Gilbert Mair on back of photoggraph. Inscriptions: Verso - The surplus waters of Rotomahana Lake rushing into the end of big rift at west end of Tarawera Mountain 100 feet below self sitting on the pinacle [sic] rock. Note the small isolated rock at back of sheltered cliff. This is where the waters pour into the rift and [can?] be heard roaring and gurgling far below.
