Contains letters from Maori to McLean with regard to land tenure; in particular, there are letters confirming sales, asking for crown grants, and requesting McLean's attendance; there are also letters about the land troubles brewing in the Taranaki region at this time.
Further letters deal with the development of Kingitanga, and attitudes towards the Kingitanga; in particular, there is one letter instructing Wiremu Nera to stop selling land and to abandon the Queen in favour of the Kingitanga. There is also a list of some of the tribes that subscribe to the Kingitanga in this letter.
There are some letters about the management and duties of Maori police and magistrates.
Also contains letters mentioning the death of the Ngati Toa chief Rawiri Puaha, a nephew of Te Rauparaha; the price per acre of land in Taranaki and a lengthy letter from Te Ngahuru discussing the proposed sale of Tapuae & Akura (Taranaki) which was strenuously opposed.
