I H (initials also possibly read J H, H I or H J. Printed text of the bookplate reads "Ascendimus; Per Scalam". Handwritten text on bookplate reads "Six Part Songs; Osbourne". Note from the collector reads "H{ullah} J{ohn Pyke}. 1812-1884. Musician, set Dicken's Village Coquettes etc ...", possibly referring to the opera written by Charles Dickens))

Description: Shows an elegantly dressed man (perhaps Kipling himself) riding in a howdah on the back of an elephant. The elephant is draped in three rugs. In front of the man, is the elephant driver, and at the back is the man who tending the hookah that the Kipling figure is smoking.
