Description: The 'Pacific' ocean is identified by a label on a bouy. A pun is being made on the peaceful name of the ocean. 'Uncle Sam' (America) is rowing a dinghy named 'Ah Sup' full of nuclear warheads towards a smoking Johnston Island and is crossing bows with Madame Guillotine (France) who answers his sally with a fierce salute. Her dinghy is also full of warheads, is named La MerDE (mer = sea, merde = murder) and is heading towards Mururoa Atoll. A small kiwi in the water (the cartoonist?) recommends "Driftnet 'em". Description: Mike Moore, clutching a book entitled 'Temping for Beginners', is about to open a door to the Prime Ministership. Behind the door 'capital punishment' awaits in the form of an executioner and an electric chair. At the bottom of the cartoon a small kiwi comments "What the [Labour] Party needs - a real live wire". Description: At the top of the cartoon is written 'Police to use cardboard cutouts in an effort to deter crime - News'. One be-wigged prosecuting barrister comments to another that he hopes that the police will have better luck with cardboard cutouts than they have had. Behind them a leather-jacketed gang member with wild hair is giving the fingers to a cardboard judge who is uttering "whirr...brutal assault...click...horrendous record...crackle...deprived childhood...click...periodic detention...whirr...". Description: Jim Bolger, Prime Minister, and Ruth Richardson, Finance Minister, both floating off the ground, are spraying with cans labelled 'Kill' an enormous fly on the window called 'NZ Welfare'. Bolger says the spray is environment-friendly, implying that killing off the welfare system will not hurt New Zealand. Richardson adds "Of course, that depends on your environment". Across the top of the cartoon is written 'Extinction threatens rare NZ batwinged fly - the only one of its kind in the world - News'. David Caygill, dressed as an elf, points to the collapsed 'rubber deficit' balloon he is holding and is saying "Sorry chief, but we gotta slight cock-up in the balloon works!" Roger Douglas and David Lange are prancing with festive spirit in the background. It is implied that there has been a 'blow-out' in the Labour Government's budget deficit. The man, who looks aghast, is in striped pyjamas.
