Description: Photographs, some probably taken by Lorna Rowland, to illustrate articles on New Zealand she wrote for the 'New Zealand Freelance' in the 1950s. Photographs are numbered, although the sequence is not complete, and some are inscribed on the back. They include images taken on Stewart Island/Rakiura, Tia Island, and in the North and South Islands of people, landscapes, and buildings. Most of the images of people are in rural settings and include a group of men "wild goose hunting", two deerstalkers, Roy Traill on Stewart Island/Rakiura, and Tom Bragg on Tia Island with kelp drying for pōhā (kelp bags for food). Also includes a photograph of Lorna Rowland on board the 'Alert' (Harbour Defence Motor Launch), possibly at Dusky Sound. Title transcribed from item. Includes scenes of outback station life, wildlife and plant life (baobab trees and wild kapok trees), landscapes, rock structures, and rural buildings, and pictures of people. Includes pictures taken while travelling on 'The Ghan' to Alice Springs and Adelaide. Places named on the photographs include Coward Springs Hotel, Beresford, Goldfields Hotel at Tennant's Creek, Horsham, Glenroy Station, Mt. Description: Album of photographs, mainly commercial postcards, of scenery, buildings, objects, and street views in England, Egypt, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand. Also includes photographs by unknown photographers of a group of people in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, swans on a lake or stream, several scenes of Napier, and the sculpture 'Ex Tenebris Lux' at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in Christchurch, for which Lorna Rowland was the model. Photographs include images of Māori carvings and carved meeting houses held at the Auckland and Otago museums. One picture of a carved pātaka (storehouse) includes a view of a display case with a preserved head. A newspaper clipping about the death of James Quinn is pasted in the album.
