Description

Contains correspondence, financial records, scrapbooks, diaries, newspaper clippings, playscripts, articles written by Rowland, and a number of books and magazines.

Some photographs cover Rowland's life in England during the 1920s and 1930s, the time that she lived in Chelsea associated with the artist, James Quinn, her world tour in 1936 on the way out to New Zealand, and her time with the McIndoe family in Dunedin. Many of the other photographs were taken by her as part of her journalistic assignments on the New Zealand Free Lance, during her stay in Australia, and for use in teaching and writing about growing herbs.

Accompanying material - Accompanied by a biographical sketch of Rowland supplied by the donor and a copy of the speech given by the donor at Rowland's funeral.

Description: Photographs, some probably taken by Lorna Rowland, to illustrate articles on New Zealand she wrote for the 'New Zealand Freelance' in the 1950s. Photographs are numbered, although the sequence is not complete, and some are inscribed on the back. They include images taken on Stewart Island/Rakiura, Tia Island, and in the North and South Islands of people, landscapes, and buildings. Most of the images of people are in rural settings and include a group of men "wild goose hunting", two deerstalkers, Roy Traill on Stewart Island/Rakiura, and Tom Bragg on Tia Island with kelp drying for pōhā (kelp bags for food). Also includes a photograph of Lorna Rowland on board the 'Alert' (Harbour Defence Motor Launch), possibly at Dusky Sound. Title transcribed from item. Description: Photographs, some taken by Lorna Rowland, and others by unknown photographers, in the 1950s, of Australian people and scenes. Some photographs have inscriptions, including dates, and some have been marked up on the backs as if for publication. Includes scenes of outback station life, wildlife and plant life (baobab trees and wild kapok trees), landscapes, rock structures, and rural buildings, and pictures of people. Includes pictures taken while travelling on 'The Ghan' to Alice Springs and Adelaide. Places named on the photographs include Coward Springs Hotel, Beresford, Goldfields Hotel at Tennant's Creek, Horsham, Glenroy Station, Mt. House Station, Love's Creek Station, Elsey Station, Sisters Rocks in Victoria, the Devil's Marbles at Alice Springs, Kimberley Research Station, Broome (including various cemeteries), Spring Creek Station, and Ambalindum Station. Description: Album of photographs, mainly commercial postcards, of scenery, buildings, objects, and street views in England, Egypt, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand. Also includes photographs by unknown photographers of a group of people in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, swans on a lake or stream, several scenes of Napier, and the sculpture 'Ex Tenebris Lux' at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in Christchurch, for which Lorna Rowland was the model. Photographs include images of Māori carvings and carved meeting houses held at the Auckland and Otago museums. One picture of a carved pātaka (storehouse) includes a view of a display case with a preserved head. A newspaper clipping about the death of James Quinn is pasted in the album. Description: Album containing photographs taken by various photographers, possibly including Lorna Rowland, between 1931 and 1936, and in 1953. Photographs include studio portraits and informal images of Rowland; photographs of the artist James Quinn in his studio, including one of him painting Lorna Rowland; photographs of some of Quinn's paintings, including two of the Duchess of York for which Rowland was a model; photographs of locations in England; and photographs taken at various ports on her voyage to New Zealand in 1936. Includes several commercial postcard photographs. There are two newsclippings about James Quinn pasted into the album. Some photographs have captions. Some pages show evidence of photographs having been removed. Photographs affixed in the album appear to date between 1931 and 1936. One photograph loose between pages had the date of 1953.
