Description

Comprises research papers and photographs relating to Fowler's varied interests. Including scripts, short stories, correspondence, research material and notes, notes on Māori recordings, maps, Māori song lyrics, bulletins and newsletters on archaeology, papers relating to Fowler's publications, research material on aspects of Māori history (especially relating to the East Coast region), diaries of Paratene Ngata and James Livingston, mobile recording unit extracts, papers relating to his autobiography, articles, Māori periodicals including 'Te Wananga', 'Matariki' and 'Te Waka Maori' and whakapapa.

The photographic prints include images of Māori people (probably mostly from the East Coast of New Zealand), including Māori performing arts groups (kapa haka), whare nui, carvings and other taonga, archeological sites, landscapes, and family group portraits. One set of quarter plate negatives include images of people, landscapes, and an anniversary parade (probably in Gisborne), taken by unknown photographers (possibly including Leo Fowler); and also a set of 35mm negatives include images of people, including people at Napier's Marineland and posing with the 'Pania of the Reef' statue, some of Māori people performing an action song, family group portraits, and some of a child sitting in a toy car at a petrol station. Most of the locations are unknown.

Arrangement: Original listing available in back file. Photographs and negatives were described in October 2016. Some of the items that were originally described as manuscripts have been given Photographic Archive reference numbers due to storage requirements.

Leo Fowler was a broadcaster, writer, radio producer and manager. He also helped establish the Gisborne Museum and was its honorary director between 1953 and 1955. He was well versed in Māori culture and maintained close friendships with leading Māori leaders including Rongowhakaata Halbert and Hetekia Te Kani Te Ua. In 1964 Fowler established the Māori programmes section of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service.

Includes correspondence from H Te Kani Te Ua relating to Ngati Kanohi whakapapa [typewritten copy of letter] and an incomplete draft of a letter by Fowler written on The Remuera Book Exchange letterhead, which names Fowler as the proprietor and is dated 1976. Two black and white photographic prints one of a group of Maori sitting on a shady bank by a car with an unidentified Maori woman in the foreground, and the photograph is of three Maori men inside a carved meeting house iwth microphones, so possibly being recorded for a broadcast.
