Description

Discusses early family life and schooling in Dunedin, training at Ngawhatu (Nelson Mental Hospital) and general nursing training at Cook Hospital in Gisborne. Discusses use of medication and being Assistant Matron at Tokanui Hospital, Te Awamutu. Talks about obstetric nursing at National Women's Hospital and the work of Professor Carey in 1957. Discusses being Matron at Kimberley Psychopaedic Hospital in Levin, followed by four years in Singapore setting up a psychiatric nursing programme. Talks about returning to New Zealand in the position of Psychiatric Nurse, Divison of Nursing, in the 1960s. Recalls work in Iran and Egypt developing nursing programmes and being an instructor at SANS where she was the Principal in 1973. Recalls being the Principal at Porirua from 1976-1979, being a member of the Oakley Inquiry, the ALAC treatment committee and a Bailey Trust member. Gives her view of psychiatric nursing.
