Description

The New Zealand Post Office oral history project was made in two parts - in 1984-85 and 1985-86 - by Judith Fyfe and Hugo Manson, and is composed of 30 interviews of people between the ages of 74 and 91. The project was commissioned by the New Zealand Post Office as a resource for the history of the Department.

The interviews are divided into two areas, the first includes biographical information on family background, childhood, education, earlier work and important events such as World War I and II, the flu epidemic, the depression, the Napier earthquake, and family. The second part of the interviews focusses on their work with the New Zealand Post Office, and covers several areas from the telegraph operating room, telegrams, training schools, morse code, World War I ANZAC Wireless Troop, postal delivery, telephone receiver sets, the first shortwave radio, the 1933 automatic exchange, linesmen, faultmen, wartime security, mail boats, message boys, exhange clerks, engineers, as well as women who became involved during the first world war.
