Description

Papers relating to Thompson's interest and research into Japan's part in the Second World War and in particular the Featherston prisoner-of-war camp, translations of Japanese publications and articles, correspondence with Japanese ex-prisoners of war and other Japanese. Also includes correspondence between Thompson and his family while he was at boarding school in China and serving in World War II.

Also comprises copy of Shiga Shigetaka's book `Nan'yo jiji' (1881), biographical pieces on Shigetaka and extracts from notes and publications including the `Biographical dictionary of Japanese history', Japanese encyclopedias, newspaper articles `The Japanese commissioner in Masterton' (1886), article on Wi Tako Ngatata, extract from the newsletter of the NZ-Japan Society of Auckland, `The First Japanese author to write about New Zealand' (1995); and notes on donor's research.

Further papers include biographical information and much comparison of life between Japan and New Zealand and lists of early books in Japanese about NZ, a bibliography of NZ in Japanese and wartime Japanese books about NZ
