Description

The bulk of the papers cover the years 1950-1970 when Iorns was involved in researching and writing for talks and articles on local history. Collection includes correspondence, minutes, newsletters, reports, draft articles, research notes, maps, financial records, and published material. Also included at fMS Papers are a number of pages from early Wairarapa newspapers, dating from the 1870s. At qMS are scrapbooks and large bound volumes, and at Micro-MS-223 is a copy of one of the scrapbooks. The collection also contains material relating to Joseph Iorns, Bennett Iorns' father, including ledgers, daybooks and rollbooks covering the period 1876-1919.

The papers included several photographs, maps, and ephemera. These have been retained with the main body of the collection. Photographs added at a later date were transferred to Photographic Archive.

Among Ben Iorns correspondents were H Adams, C J Carle, F Daniell, I A H Dixon, E Foreman, E Fosson, R McClymont, N McDonald, C Pearce, R B Sayers, P H Stidolph, J P Thomson, E Townsley, and M Wilton

Ben Iorns was a great-grandson of Joseph Masters, the well-known pioneer Wairarapa settler after whom Masterton was named. He was recognised as an authority on the history of his native Wairarapa area, and in particular on Masterton, and was also concerned with environmental issues in the region. He was involved with a number of local organisations including Wairarapa Committee of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, Tararua National Park Project Committee, Mt Holdsworth Club, and Masterton Historical Society.
