Photographs relating to the West Coast; Captain Antonio Reggio; ship 'Nino Bixio'; and ...
Date: 1939-1987
From: Henderson, James Herbert, 1918-2005: Collection
Reference: PAColl-1005
Description: Black and white photographs likely taken by Jim Henderson between 1939 and 1987. Includes portraits of Dan Greaney, a West Coast roadman; Archdeacon James Young, also of the West Coast; and Captain Antonio Raggio, commander of the Italian prisoner of war ship 'Nino Bixio'. Also includes several photographs of the bulldozer which was the first over-land vehicle to travel to Haast, West Coast in Christmas 1953; a photograph of 'Nino Bixio'; and a photograph of a sculpture by Peter Corlett named 'Simpson and his donkey', which was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial. Also includes one piece of photographic ephemera, a Kodak envelope which previously housed some of the smaller photographs of the bulldozer. Several of the photographs have been annotated to include information on context and use, such as dates, names, descriptions, and publication information. Photographs of the bulldozer, and portraits of Dan Greaney and Archdeacon James Young were presumably taken by Henderson for inclusion in his publication 'Tales of the Coast' (1984) about the lives of West Coast residents. Photographs of Nino Bixio and Captain Antonio Raggio, of the Reefton - Haast bulldozer journey, and of the Corlett sculpture appear to have been taken for inclusion in newspaper articles. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 19 b&w original photographic print(s) including one piece of photographic ephemera.
