Description: Most of the volume continues the diary account from the previous volume (MS-1225). It begins with his journey further up the Whanganui River and back, with several lengthy descriptions of places visited. The diary then continues with accounts of office work in Wanganui before describing and expedition into the Rangitikei and Manawatu areas completing arrangements for the Rangitikei purchase. Description: The diary describes an expedition from New Plymouth to Waitara and on to Wanganui. McLean describes the Maori settlements visited and the native meetings he attended. Among those he met was the chief Te Heu Heu. All is interspersed with religious reflections. There is a drawing of a kiwi (and he mentions capturing two on the expedition). Description: The earliest entries describe a meeting with Ngati Apa and Ngati Ruanui about Rangitikei. McLean then travelled down the coast to Wellington where he spent several days on official meetings, including meetings with Governor Grey. On the way back he describes a big meeting with Ngati Toa about land at Waikanae and then describes a journey up the Manawatu and on to central Hawkes Bay, with descriptions of his journey, people met and meetings held. Diary, Maori notes and draft letters

Description: Diary entries entries cover the period 4 March-13 May 1848 and 16 March-8 April 1849. The 1848 entries describe in detail his overland journey down the coast from New Plymouth to Wellington and back. A main purpose of the expedition was to meet with Wiremu Kingi and other Te Ati Awa leaders to discuss their claims to Waitara. He also describes meeting with Te Rauparaha as well as meetings with Colonel Wakefield and other political figures in Wellington. There are also draft letters relating to his negotiations and notes on Maori claims. The 1849 entries describe his meetings with Ngatiapa and other claimants to the lands of the Rangitikei area. Description: Contains rough diary entries for negotiations around the Wanganui area in May-July 1848 and a visit to Wellington in from December 1848 to January. The later account includes accounts of meetings with the Governor and other officials, his enjoyment of the Wellington Highland Games, and his account of a meeting, accompanying Lieutenant-Governor Eyre, with local Maori about Rangitikei land on his way back overland. As with other diaries in this series the entries are interspersed with notes (including a long discussion of American treaties with tribes) and draft letters describing his actions.
