Burke, William Ellison Messervy, 1830-1900

Arrived in Canterbury in the early 1850s and was employed by the Resident Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, from 1859 to 1871; he was bailiff from 1867, resigning in 1871, shortly before being convicted of fraud and sentenced to four years imprisonment. Compiled reminiscences with sketches and clippings of his contemporaries. He was baptised on 26 Feb 1830 at St Heliers, Jersey and is thought to have died in Christchurch about 1900. He married Laura Ennie Caggett on 22 Jan 1863 at Lambeth, London. They had six sons, all born in Christchurch. [information from g-grandaughter, Alison Hollis, Upper Hutt]

Provenance: First page contains following inscription in J C Andersen's hand: "The original, a rough book of notes, clippings etc, was in the possession of R C Bishop in 1913; he lent it to me and I copied out most of the items, copied his rough drawings of houses etc. The original is not indexed. Burke was hard up and sold the original to Bishop for £5 I think it was he told me. PS What happened to the original when Bishop died?".
