Description: David Garrick in quasi-Elizabethan costume as Richard III from Act 5 Scene 3. Hogarth illustrates the moment where Richard wakes in his tent on the eve of Bosworth Field, haunted by earlier crimes. He is frozen in terror, reaching for his sword and fending off the ghosts with his raised hand. Above his taut, elongated body, the great curtains of the tent, with the crown and a painted Christ resting in the shadows, draw the eye backward to the camp with its flaring bonfires and the dawn beyond, breaking over distant hills. His scatttered armour lies at his feet. Garrick is contorted into a `serpentine' line - a stretched `S' shape that Hogarth considered distinctly beautiful. The ermine trim of Garrick's cloak and the curtains behind him echo this effect. Description: Commentary from the artist: 'The finding of Richard III's body after all these years raises the question of how he'd find recent upheavals in Europe, especially the current outrage about horseflesh being used instead of beef.' Richard III utters the Shakespearian quotation 'A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!' at the 'Bosworth Trottoria'. A waiter tells him that he come at the right time. Other equine puns feature in the cartoon. Refers to the scandal over the substitution of horse flesh for beef in the United Kingdom coinciding with the discovery of the body of Richard III. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
