Description:
Greeting cards a print of an original ink drawing of a small stone Japanese lantern on a tiled surface in front of bamboo plants. Handwritten inscription inside reads: "With the compliments of the Japan Society of New Zealand, Christmas 1976"
Information from Nola Sinclair, 3 October 2013: "The lantern was presented to the City of Wellington in 1976 at a ceremony in the Botanical Gardens where Michael Fowler the Mayor of Wellington at the time, accepted the lantern on behalf of the citizens of Wellington. The lantern was to be the nucleus of a proposed Japanese Garden that was under construction. The lantern was a gift from The Japan Society of New Zealand (Inc.) who raised the money for its purchase from a company in Tokyo. The Japan Line shipped it to New Zealand at no cost. ... Michael Fowler was asked to make a drawing of the lantern that the Society could use on cards as a fundraiser for the Japanese Garden. The lantern was also used as the official symbol for the Society. ... The lantern stayed in its original position near the duck pond in the gardens, but by the early 1990's the area needed upgrading and the lantern had suffered some damage. The Japan Society of Wellington New Zealand (Inc.) approached the Botanical Gardens with a suggestion that it be moved to a safer area, possibly near the waterfall and then gave permission that it be adapted to house the Peace Flame and be sited in the pool below the waterfall. Accordingly on 25 June 1994, the adapted Stone Lantern and the Peace Flame housed inside it, were dedicated. These two gifts to the people of Wellington are now united in the Peace Garden".
