The Institute was founded 1877 in rooms over the old Evening Post corner (now Stewart Dawson's). A move was made to Harding's Corner (later Perett's), Manners and Willis Street, and in 1893 they moved to building on the corner of Victoria and Mercer Streets. In 1906 they purchased the buildings at 101-117 Cuba Street designed by Thomas Turnbull & Son (and built for Robert Hannah who set up business there in 1874).
