First Labour Prime Minister of Australia, 27 Apr-15 Aug 1904. Born in Chile, son of Johan Christian Tanck and Martha Skinner. After his father's death his mother married George Thomas Watson 1869. Worked as a compositor with the North Otago Times and Oamaru Mail; involved in trade unions. Lost his job 1886 and moved to Sydney where he worked for various newspapers and was an active trade unionist and member of the Labour Party. Was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly 1894; in 1901 became the first Labour leader in the new Federal parliament. Resigned as leader 1907 and retired from politics 1910, becoming involved in other business activities. [`Southern people; a dictionary of Otago Southland biography', 1998]
