Description: Obverse shows a profile head of Queen Elizabeth II. Reverse shows a stylised kotuku (white heron) in flight and the title of the medal. The box is embossed with the Queen's crest and the words "The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal". Inside the lid in gold letters on white fabric are the words "Royal Australian Mint". The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal was awarded only during 1990 to 3,632 people in recognition of the contributions they had made to some aspect of New Zealand life. It was designed by Mr Phillip O'Shea, New Zealand Herald of Arms Extraordinary. The obverse of the medal bears the effigy of the Queen by Raphael Maklouf (as on the New Zealand coinage of the period). The reverse bears the official 1990 symbol, a kotuku (white heron) designed by Fred Graham and Roy Good (Information supplied by Phillip O'Shea.
