Greenwood, Jane, 1838-1931

Third daughter of Dr John Danforth Greenwood & Sarah (née Field) of Motueka. Arrived in Nelson with her parents and siblings aboard the 'Phoebe' in early 1843, moving from Nelson to the family house 'Woodlands' at Motueka. Her mother, Sarah, painted her portrait 'aged nearly 14 years' in February 1852. Wife of Leonard Stowe, Clerk of the House, of Stowe Hill, No. 2 Tinakori Road, Wellington. They were married at Christ Church, Nelson, on 31 May 1871. They had three sons, Harry, Reginald, and Leonard (died as infant) ; and two daughters, Emily Muriel (Mrs Brian Lysaght) and Mary Sylvia Courtney Stowe (1873-1927). Jane Stowe painted in watercolours, including many views of Wellington Harbour from the family home, 'Tiakiwai'; she also painted flowers. She exhibited her watercolours (both as J. Stowe and Mrs L. Stowe) at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts 1883-1931. Received 1st prize for her drawing 'Study of a head', 1st prize for a hand-painted door panel 'Poppies' 3rd prize for a five-fold screen, and honourable mention for a landscape in sepia at the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, 1885. Died of bronchitis, Wellington on 5 Nov 1931 aged 93.
