Description: A large group of Europeans on the right, including Captain James Wilson and his nephew William Wilson meeting with Tahitians on the left, including the Tahitian King and Queen. The King and Queen are held aloft on the shoulders of their bearers. Their blind witch doctor is crouching to the left. The picture was commissioned by the London Missionary Society. The oil painting from which this print was taken was commissioned from Smirke, the artist, by the London Missionary Society to commemorate the success of Captain Wilson's voyage to Tahiti. They sold the copyright to the print seller Jeffries in return for the first 400 copies of the print (100 coloured and 300 plain). Description: Standing portrait of Raiatean man Mai, or Omai, draped in flowing robes, in classical pose. Mai, or Omai, from Raiatea in the Society Islands, was the first Polynesian to visit Britain. He travelled there from Raiatea in 1774 aboard the "Adventure", Captain Tobias Furneaux, from Cook's second voyage. During his visit to England his portrait was painted by Reynolds, William Hodges and Nathaniel Dance Holland. He returned with Cook to the Society Islands in 1777.
