Surgeon's mate on James Cook's third circumnavigation, on board HMS Discovery. Drew landscapes, portraits and natural history records. Published his own account of the voyage Authentic narrative of a voyage performed by Captain Cook ...(London, 1782). Born at Ely, Cambridgeshire, the son of Thomas (b 1705) and Elizabeth Ellis. It is supposed that he was educated at St Bartholomews Hospital, London, but no evidence for this has been located.(His name is occasionally confused with that of Rev. William Webb Ellis 1806-1872).
