Description: Shows illustrations of a young person about to dive into a swimming pool, girls playing netball, and a teacher presenting an award. The text gives reasons for and against smoking: For: It helps to relax, takes the strain off tired nerves; aids sociability; induces a feeling of relief. Against: Can irritate the lungs and throat, and shorten breath, upset action of the heart, set up and perpetuate catarrhal conditions and cause morning cough (although "there is no proof that it can cause permanent damage to lungs or heart, or induce cancer") Smoking is said to be habit forming and reduces lung capacity, so should be used in moderation by adults, and adolescents who want to excel at sport should abstain. Dated from ca 1945, when the same notice also appeared in periodicals such as "Students' digest" (November 1945, pages 18). Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s).
